Step 1: Conduct a Design Search (Optional but Recommended)

Before filing, it's advisable to check whether your design is already registered in Bangladesh.

Step 2: Prepare the Design Application

Prepare an application with:

• Representations (drawings, images, or photographs) of the design
• Class and article name (as per the Locarno Classification)
• Statement of novelty

You may claim priority if the design was first filed in a Paris Convention country.

Step 3: File the Application

Submit the application to the DPDT along with:

• Representations of the design (4 copies)
• Prescribed government fee
• Power of Attorney (for foreign applicants)

Foreign applicants must apply through a local agent like NEXORA IP.

Step 4: Formal Examination

The DPDT examines the application to ensure:

• The design is new or original
• It complies with legal formalities

Timeline: Typically 2–4 months

Step 5: Registration & Certificate Issuance

If approved, the design is registered, and the DPDT issues a Certificate of Registration.

The design is recorded in the Register of Designs and published in the Official Gazette.

Validity: 25 years from the date of filing or priority date

Renewable for three further periods of 5 years each (maximum 25 years)

Step 6: Renewal of Design

To keep the design registration active, you must:

• File a renewal application before expiry (using Form 16)
• Pay the prescribed renewal fee

Late renewal may be accepted with a surcharge within a grace period.
